Welcome To The Party

from Welcome To The Party (EP) by Exposed Brick

about

This track, perhaps strangely, is in the voice of Lavrentiy Beria, Head of the NKVD (KGB) in the Soviet Union. Able & murderous, he was a serial rapist.

Whilst the idea sprang from a play on words (Beria, bury her & the double meaning of party), the idea really is to suggest that such psychopaths (probably) consider themselves to have done little or nothing wrong, & are able to rationalise away any suggestion of blame or guilt.

The upbeat, happy synthpop feel of this deliberately juxtaposes the macabre nature of the lyrics.

lyrics

I tried to save
I did my best
Not just her
But all the rest

Who didn’t take liberties?

Most of them
Came to me
Sound-proofed rooms
For privacy

Who didn’t take liberties?
Welcome to the party

Chorus
I’m not a monster
I tried to help her
I’m not a monster
I didn’t bury her

A transaction
An act of love
For someone
Hand in glove

Who didn’t take liberties?

As they left
I gave them flowers
So gallant
For so few hours

Who didn’t take liberties?
Welcome to the party

Chorus
